I watched my first episode of The Chosen two weeks ago while visiting my daughter and grandkids in Washington State. We subsequently binged a few of the episodes throughout the afternoon and into the evening hours.
Due to time restrictions before this visit, I had not previously been able to watch the show, even having several seasons on DVDs sent to me by other family members. But here I am, six years later, writing about the show and the effect it may or may not be having on people around the world (with ruffled memories of The Divinci Code and Angels and Demons).
While not addressing it at the time, I do recall the myriad of Christians, both ministers and lay people, seeking to bring down the wrath of God on those two movies I previously mentioned. Now, two seasons into The Chosen television series and having social media plastering my feeds with related news and articles, I took the time to read two. One profoundly opposing the show and the second not so profoundly admiring the show.
The author, Joe Edge (2023), I believe, refers to The Chosen as “filth” and writes that “and thus adding to the Scriptures is a very dangerous sin.” Micah Lang (2021), the author of the second article I read, references this, also adding to scripture as he writes, “Taking creative liberties to more fully expand on conversations, relationships, and individuals in the Gospels.”
At this point, I must ask a question. Have I missed something here in watching the show’s first two seasons? At what point on the television show did it tell me its purpose was to add something to Scripture?
I find it somewhat amusing to watch various religious leaders get so upset. Do they feel that these television shows are stepping on their toes? However, to be fair, I do understand these leaders’ concerns. Might I simply suggest that they are approaching their concerns in the wrong way?
Yes. It is blasphemous for any person to add to the Scriptures (Deut. 4:2). Are any of these shows I’ve mentioned above adding to or claiming to be adding to the Scriptures?
So, allow me to share what I observe going on here. I believe it is the religious leaders, once again, presuming that the ordinary person is not intelligent enough to know the difference between a television show (or a movie) and the truth of the Bible.
To be continued…
